Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), founded in 1842, is the oldest, largest and most comprehensive university of technology in The Netherlands, with excellent international rankings (e.g. ranked 58nd global in the World Reputation Rankings van Times Higher Education magazine, 6th University of Technology in Europe). It offers a wide variety of education in Science, Engineering and Design at 8 Faculties with in total 5.189 staff members. A total of 23.461 students are enrolled in one of its 16 bachelor programs or in one of its 35 master programs.
The Industrial Design Engineering Faculty (IDE) at TU Delft is one of the oldest and largest multidisciplinary product and service design oriented research and education institution in the world. It is not only influential on, but also has a global leading role in the development of the discipline. It has currently over 2,000 students enrolled and over 6,000 engineers have graduated from the Faculty since it was founded in 1969. The faculty is also regarded as a global leader in the field of design research, with currently more than 200 staff members. About 9% of the global scientific publications in the field of Industrial Design originate from IDE.
The Design Engineering department focuses on applying responsive technologies on the
development and design of new products and services. The dynamics in this field are primarily determined by the pace of change in society, in which new developments in human needs and technological possibilities follow each other rapidly. These include new materials and production techniques, ICT and Internet of Things, healthcare, sustainability and striving towards a circular economy. The department strives to integrate specific technologies in a new, flexible design process.
